(Atlanta) Alphonso Davies will captain the Canadian men’s soccer team at the Copa America, Soccer Canada announced Monday after training.
Stephen Eustaquio was also named deputy.
Davies, 23, has been crowned Soccer Canada Player of the Year four times. The new captain already has 48 senior international caps, as well as holding numerous men’s national team records.
Head coach Jesse Marsch, a former head coach of the Montreal Impact, said Davies was an experienced young professional, “who has all the attributes to be an excellent captain.”
“I know he is ready to take on the challenge of taking on a larger role with more responsibilities,” he wrote in a statement published on the Soccer Canada website.
Marsch also called Eustaquio a “great leader”, adding that the duo can lead the team to the FIFA World Cup on home soil in 2026.
Eustaquio, 27, has 37 caps with Canada’s senior team. The FC Porto midfielder in Portugal was recently voted Soccer Canada’s Player of the Year.
Canada begins its journey Thursday against Argentina in Atlanta.
