Ursula von der Leyen cannot yet be entirely sure whether she will be nominated by the heads of state and government for a second term as President of the EU Commission.
The heads of state and government of the 27 EU states had discussed the composition of the new Commission in the evening. Chancellor Olaf Scholz had come to Brussels with confidence, and the liberal Mark Rutte had also signaled his support for Ursula von der Leyen.
Scholz said before the talks that he hoped to receive an answer “as soon as possible” to the question “who will be the next Commission President”. A clear reference to Ursula von der Leyen, because apart from the CDU politician, no other woman is being considered for the post.
The European elections brought a “stable majority” for the center-right EPP alliance, the Social Democrats and the Liberals. “We live in difficult times. And it is important to know what will happen next with Europe,” said the SPD politician.
