More than 100,000 fraudulent text messages were sent from one phone number within just two weeks. A victim’s report triggered a police investigation.
In the fight against a gang of fraudsters, the police in Oberhausen have temporarily arrested a 19-year-old during a search. The public prosecutor’s office and Hanover police announced this on Tuesday. A 61-year-old from Hanover had previously fallen victim to the gang: He had transferred money because his supposed son had asked him for help in an emergency via SMS and WhatsApp messages. The man later recognized the fraud and filed a complaint.
During their investigations, the officers came across a gang that had demonstrably cheated other people across Germany out of money via messenger services. More than 100,000 SMS messages were sent from the number they ultimately tracked down in Oberhausen within just two weeks.
During the search on Thursday, the police seized around 2,000 euros in cash in addition to the cell phone used in the crimes. The 19-year-old main suspect has been remanded in custody.
