Virginia State Senator Suhas Subramanyam won the Democratic primary in Virginia’s 10th congressional district after receiving an endorsement from the retiring Rep. Jennifer Wexton. Wexton, who is stepping down due to health reasons, backed Subramanyam over several other candidates vying for the seat. The district, which has historically been Republican but is now trending Democratic, includes places like Dulles International Airport and Ashburn, home to the Washington Commanders NFL team.
Subramanyam, who previously worked as a White House technology policy adviser under President Barack Obama, expressed his gratitude for Wexton’s endorsement. He has a strong connection to the community and has collaborated with Wexton on various local issues important to constituents. Additionally, he has a background in cybersecurity and government technology modernization, as well as experience in organizing volunteers for disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina.
The 10th congressional district encompasses densely populated areas in Loudoun County, the city of Manassas, and rural counties like Fauquier and Rappahannock. Wexton’s seat was previously held by Republicans like Rep. Frank Wolf and Rep. Barbara Comstock, but she flipped it in 2018 and the district has been leaning more Democratic ever since.
The Cook Political Report predicts that the district will likely remain in Democratic hands in the upcoming elections. This transition reflects a broader trend of shifting political dynamics in the region. Suhas Subramanyam’s victory in the primary sets the stage for a competitive race in November, as he seeks to continue the Democratic representation in Virginia’s 10th congressional district.
