The man from Poland was climbing Germany’s highest mountain with two companions on Wednesday, police announced on Thursday. According to the findings, the three men were walking through snowy terrain around 30 meters apart from each other. Near the Irmenscharte, the two front climbers noticed that the 40-year-old was no longer following them. They then saw him sliding down the valley below on the Höllentalferner. He had therefore fallen several hundred meters.
The two climbers made an emergency call. A rescue helicopter arrived, but the emergency doctor could only confirm the death of the 40-year-old, police said. Investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing.
