A woman moved to Germany about eight months ago and discovered a harsh reality: making friends is not that easy.
Finding friends is often not that easy. This is what a woman who moved to Germany about eight months ago is experiencing. That’s why she is looking for advice on Reddit.
In a post that has been commented on hundreds of times, the woman describes: “I’ve been in Germany for about eight months now, and I don’t know if it’s me or if it’s a German thing – I feel like ‘friendships’ are very closed off here.”
The Reddit user gives an example: “People I exercise with regularly are just that – people I exercise with.” It’s the same with people she meets in class or even lives with. She thought, for example, that after months of meeting up every week to exercise, you would at least be friends with a few people.
According to her post, she has many interests, hobbies, and work-related things to do, and many people with whom she shares these activities. However, she still feels like she doesn’t know anyone here. She wonders if this is something she will have to get used to.
One Reddit user writes in the comments that she is talking about acquaintances, not friends. Another thinks: “Friendships are relationships with depth.” You are not automatically friends if you have the same hobby. Many advise the woman to simply ask people if they want to do something with her. But the majority of people simply agree with her and say that this is just how it is in Germany.
