(Atlanta) Quebecer Moïse Bombito was the target of racist messages on social media after making a tackle at the expense of Lionel Messi on Thursday in Argentina’s 2-0 victory against Canada in the Copa America.
The Canadian national team released a statement about the messages late Thursday night, but did not mention Bombito by name.
“Canada Soccer is aware of and deeply troubled by the racist comments made online directed at one of our Men’s National Team players following tonight’s match,” it read. “We are in communication with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL regarding this matter.”
Bombito made an Instagram post without referring to a specific incident, writing: “My beautiful Canada. No room for this bullshit. »
Messi stayed in the game after the tackle and set up a goal, as Argentina began their Copa America title defense.
