(Winnipeg) The Winnipeg Jets have rewarded defenseman Dylan DeMelo with a four-year contract extension, the Manitoba club announced Tuesday.

This pact will allow it to pocket an annual average of 4.9 million US dollars.

DeMelo, 31, played in all 82 games for the Jets last season, setting career highs in points (31) and assists (28) along the way.

He also posted a plus-46 rating – second in that category in the NHL – and led the Jets with 139 blocked shots.

DeMelo, who was selected in the sixth round, 179th overall, by the San Jose Sharks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, has played in 554 career games with the Jets, Ottawa Senators and Sharks. He has 144 points (17-127) and 265 penalty minutes.

He also had four assists and served 16 penalty minutes in 29 career playoff games.
