(Medellín) One person died and nine others were injured after one of the cabins of the Medellín cable car fell on Wednesday, said the mayor of Colombia’s second city.

The cabin became detached from its cable in the early hours of the morning as it was about to reach one of the stations, Federico Gutiérrez said on the X network.

Transportation on the cable car line “will be suspended until the causes of this tragedy are clearly identified,” he added.

The Medellín Metrocable, which has several distinct lines, is one of the main means of transportation for residents of the city of 3.9 million built astride many hills.

This is the first accident since its inauguration in 2004.
