A relaxed breakfast in a restaurant with his wife. But then came the shock: the man from the US state of Florida’s innards burst out of his abdomen at the table. And all because he had to sneeze. But how can that be?

The 63-year-old patient has a medical history. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer and suffering a relapse, the man had to undergo several treatments, but these brought with them various health complications.

The shocking case was published in May of this year in the prestigious journal “American Journal of Medical Case Reports”. Just 15 days before breakfast in the restaurant, his bladder had been surgically removed, leaving a wound in his abdomen.

On the day of the restaurant incident, doctors told the man that his healing was progressing well and that the staples holding the wound together could be removed. He and his wife decided to celebrate this progress with breakfast at the restaurant. But fate had other plans.

During breakfast, the man began to sneeze violently and cough. He immediately noticed a “wet” feeling and pain in his abdomen. When he looked down, he saw “several pink loops of intestine protruding from the wound,” the medical journal reported.

Dazed, the man covered the bulge with his shirt and briefly considered driving himself to the hospital. However, worried that the wound might tear open further, he called an ambulance.

The paramedics covered the wound with a bandage, gave the patient a painkiller and took him to a nearby clinic. Three urological surgeons carefully placed the removed intestine back into the abdominal cavity and examined the entire small intestine without finding any signs of injury.

The article states that such complications after bladder removal have so far been inadequately described in the medical literature. However, it is well known in medicine that wounds in general can burst open after operations.
