(Prague) The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic opened on Friday with an honorary prize awarded to American actor and director Viggo Mortensen.

Mortensen, a three-time Oscar finalist for best actor, was to receive the festival’s President’s Award during Friday’s opening ceremony.

He was also due to present at the festival the second film he directed, The Dead Don’t Hurt.

Special guest of the Karlovy Vary Festival, Oscar-winning director and producer Steve Soderbergh will present two films, Kafka and Mr Kneff, in a Kafka retrospective.

This retrospective will present film adaptations of books by Franz Kafka on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of the author born in Prague in 1883.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival runs until July 6. The grand jury, which includes Australian actor Geoffrey Rush, will view 12 competing films to award the top prize, the Crystal Globe.
