Support for Kamala Harris Grows Among Black Sororities and Fraternities

Vice President Kamala Harris is gaining significant support from Black sororities and fraternities, known as the “Divine Nine,” as she aims to strengthen the Democratic base in her presidential campaign. Harris, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, is set to address another Black sorority, Zeta Phi Beta, at their annual national gathering in Indianapolis.

The Divine Nine, consisting of the most prominent Black sororities and fraternities in the country, have come together to mobilize Black voters across the nation. With over two million members, these organizations are playing a crucial role in rallying support for Harris even before her official campaign events begin.

Representative Frederica S. Wilson of Florida, who is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, highlighted the long history of these Greek letter organizations and their dedication to community service. She noted that despite their years of work, they had not received much recognition until Harris, a fellow sorority member, entered the presidential race in 2020. The excitement and pride among these groups’ members have been palpable since President Biden endorsed Harris as his successor.

Harris’s connection to Alpha Kappa Alpha, which dates back to her college days at Howard University, has further solidified her support among Black sororities and fraternities. As she prepares to address Zeta Phi Beta members at their national gathering, her presence as the potential Democratic nominee is expected to energize the audience and strengthen the coalition backing her campaign.

The unity and enthusiasm displayed by the Divine Nine in support of Harris reflect a growing momentum within the Black community to rally behind a candidate who shares their values and experiences. As Harris continues to engage with these influential organizations, her message of unity and progress resonates with members who see her as a symbol of hope and representation in the political arena.

In the upcoming months leading to the presidential election, the support from Black sororities and fraternities is expected to play a significant role in mobilizing voters and securing crucial endorsements for Harris. The collective voice of the Divine Nine carries a weight of history and tradition, amplifying the impact of their advocacy for Harris’s candidacy and the values she represents. As the campaign progresses, the solidarity among these organizations will serve as a powerful force in shaping the outcome of the election and advancing the interests of the Black community.
