EXCLUSIVE: WEST LEBANON, N.H. — Senator Bernie Sanders is on a mission to ensure that former President Trump does not return to the White House. The senator from Vermont is campaigning in New Hampshire and Maine this weekend on behalf of Vice President Kamala Harris.
During a recent interview with Fox News, Sanders laughed off Trump’s claim that Harris is more liberal than him. Trump has been trying to define Harris as ultra-liberal, stating that she is the most incompetent and far-left vice president in American history. Sanders refuted these claims, emphasizing that Harris is not more progressive than he is.
Sanders highlighted the importance of defeating Trump in the upcoming election, calling it the most crucial election in our lifetimes. He pointed out Trump’s history of lying, his stance on women’s reproductive rights, his denial of climate change, and his lack of commitment to democracy as reasons why Trump must be defeated.
While Sanders is campaigning for Harris, he has not formally endorsed her. He urged Harris to focus on issues relevant to the working class, such as lowering prescription drug costs, tax reform, expanding child care and affordable housing, and addressing climate change.
Sanders also discussed the importance of Harris’s choice for a running mate, which is expected to be announced soon. He expressed hope that Harris would choose a progressive candidate who aligns with his values.
Sanders’s campaign comes shortly after President Biden suspended his 2024 re-election rematch with Trump. Biden’s immediate endorsement of Harris led to a surge of support from Democratic leaders. Harris has secured the backing of a majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention and has raised $129 million in fundraising since Biden’s announcement.
Republicans have criticized the process, calling it undemocratic. Trump and Senator Tom Cotton accused the Democrats of ignoring the will of the voters. However, Sanders defended the quick transition, stating that given the circumstances, it was necessary for Harris to rally support quickly.
As the 2024 election approaches, Sanders continues to advocate for progressive values and the defeat of Trump. His support for Harris and his emphasis on key issues facing the working class reflect his commitment to a more equitable and just society.
