Jorge Armando Contreras, a former school official in California, has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for embezzling $16.7 million from the Magnolia School District in Orange County. The 53-year-old was also ordered to pay back the stolen amount as restitution.
Contreras, who worked as the director and senior director of fiscal services at the school district, used his position to carry out the embezzlement scheme. Instead of using the funds to help socioeconomically disadvantaged children, he chose to fund a luxurious lifestyle for himself. He spent the stolen money on expensive items like Louis Vuitton bags and $2,000 tequila bottles.
The embezzlement scheme started in 2016 and continued until July 2023, during which time Contreras was able to accumulate millions of dollars for personal use. The school district serves students from preschool through sixth grade in Anaheim and Stanton, with a majority of the students classified as socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Authorities have seized about $7.7 million worth of personal and real property linked to Contreras’s fraudulent activities. Despite his guilty plea in March to charges of embezzlement, theft, and intentional misapplication of funds, Contreras’s lawyer has not provided any comments on the matter.
