A British couple have been living in a converted van and travelling the world for a year. Now they share what it has cost them so far.
Meera and Will from the UK have decided to forego a traditional apartment and instead live in a van and travel the world, spending less than they would on an apartment while still having the freedom to travel, as they reveal on the platform TikTok.
Their journey has taken them through ten countries so far, including Sweden, Denmark and Spain. While Will works remotely as an electrical engineer, Meera is financing the trip with her savings.
Meera shared on TikTok what their year-long trip has cost so far. Among other things, they spent £2,057 on groceries, £1,813 on eating out and £3,128 on petrol.
They also spent £97.80 on gas, which they use frequently, especially in colder countries such as Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Although they only stayed at campsites “when necessary”, they spent £242 on this and £1,408 on attractions and activities such as museums and skiing.
Additional expenses included £1,874 (about €2,223) for repairs to the van, £1,650 (about €1,958) for insurance and breakdown assistance, £919 (about €1,090) for shopping, £428 (about €507) for tolls, £919 (about €1,090) for public transport and £458 (about €543) for the care of her cat Lola.
In total, their annual expenses amount to around £15,000 (about €17,795), not including the van, on which they spent almost £17,000 (about €20,180), including the cost of purchasing and renovating the vehicle.
Viewers were surprised by the relatively low cost of this lifestyle, and many were inspired by the couple’s expense breakdown. “That’s incredibly little for what you’ve made in the last 12 months,” commented one user on TikTok.
In another case, the move to the van has a completely different background. An anxiety disorder and depression force Miriam to leave her usual life behind. But it is precisely life in a confined space in the middle of nature that gives her new courage to live.
Moment of shock at the football festival: Police officers shot down an armed attacker on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn. The situation is secure, the background is still unclear.
Stephanie was on holiday with her family in Spain. Shortly before her return flight she was shocked: she urgently needed brain surgery.
