The Detroit Pistons have fired head coach Monty Williams after just one season, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet made an announcement on the matter. The ESPN network was the first to announce the news.
The Pistons went 14-68 last season, the worst in the NBA. Williams was in the first year of a six-year contract expected to pay him $78.5 million. However, the team decided to make changes within its management at the end of the campaign. Trajan Langdon was hired as president of basketball operations and general manager Troy Weaver was fired.
The campaign was disastrous for the Pistons, who won two of their first three games, then did not win a single game for the next two months.
They had a 28-game losing streak, the worst single-season losing streak in NBA history.
