(Calgary) Alberta New Democrats have chosen a former Calgary mayor, Naheed Nenshi, to become the party’s new leader.

Mr. Nenshi succeeds Rachel Notley, who was premier of Alberta from 2015 to 2019. He easily won in the first round, obtaining more than 62,000 of the 85,000 votes cast. The new leader does not sit in the Legislative Assembly.

There were three candidates competing against her: former ministers Sarah Hoffman and Kathleen Ganley and MPP Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse.

Ms. Notley gave a farewell speech on Friday evening. She took the opportunity to assert that the party was more powerful than ever.

She announced her resignation in January, seven months after the NDP’s second consecutive defeat against the United Conservative Party.
