After intensive investigations, the police have solved the alleged attack on a 23-year-old jogger in Schermbeck on the Lower Rhine: The young woman stabbed herself in the stomach and then called the emergency services, as the investigating public prosecutor said on Thursday.
Her motives for doing so are unclear. She must expect to be charged with faking a crime, said the prosecutor. The young woman is now back home after her medical treatment.
After the incident on June 10, the police initially assumed that the woman had been brutally attacked and searched for clues around the alleged crime scene on a forest path in Schermbeck (Wesel district). The investigations caused considerable unrest among the population, said the public prosecutor. In fact, however, there was never any danger at any time, as there was no perpetrator. This was revealed by a further detailed questioning of those affected.
