American Red Cross Assists Sikeston Family After Tornado

Norma Holmes, a resident of Sikeston, Missouri, recently sought assistance from the American Red Cross following a devastating tornado that damaged her home. Norma, originally from St. Louis, has been living in Sikeston for the past four years and works as a cashier at a local convenience store. She is a dedicated mother to four daughters, ranging in age from 12 to 20.

When the tornado hit her home on May 25th, Norma’s main concern was the safety of her children. She managed to quickly guide them to safety as a large tree in their front yard fell on the house. Despite the damage to their home and vehicles, Norma and her children found refuge at a Red Cross shelter set up at the local YMCA. The Red Cross volunteers provided tarps and totes to help secure their belongings and patch up the roof.

Norma expressed her gratitude for the support they received during this challenging time. She considers herself blessed to have found safety and resources to aid in their recovery process. While the journey to full recovery may be long, Norma remains optimistic and thankful for the assistance they have received.

At the Multi-Agency Resource Center, Norma’s family received feminine hygiene supplies, information on disaster relief resources, and financial assistance from the American Red Cross. She hopes to use this assistance to repair at least one of her damaged vehicles.

Norma’s story is just one of many from Sikeston and the surrounding areas. The Red Cross, along with other disaster relief partners, are working together to help those affected by the tornado as they rebuild and create more resilient communities.
