Angels Flight Railway, located in downtown Los Angeles, has seen a lot of changes over the years. From ferrying passengers up and down a hill to dealing with maintenance and safety challenges, this iconic funicular railway has been through it all. Now, in an effort to keep up with the rising costs of insurance, maintenance, and labor, officials have announced a fare increase from $1.00 to $1.50 starting June 1. This change will also include a souvenir round trip option for $3 and will allow L.A. Metro TAP Card users to ride at half price.

The last time the fares were raised was back in 2017, and officials are confident that this increase will be sufficient for the foreseeable future. Hal Bastian, president of the nonprofit Angels Flight Railway Foundation, emphasized the importance of maintaining the safety and heritage of this historic railway, stating, “Angels Flight is not just a mode of transportation — it’s a living piece of Los Angeles history.” Despite the challenges it has faced, including a tragic accident in 2001 that resulted in the death of a tourist and injuries to several others, Angels Flight remains an integral part of the city’s history.

The railway first opened in 1901, offering commuters a way to navigate the steep terrain between Bunker Hill housing and downtown Los Angeles offices. After shutting down in 1969 and reopening in 1996, Angels Flight has had its fair share of ups and downs, literally. From temporary closures due to maintenance issues to a derailment in 2013, the railway has faced various setbacks. However, with new safety standards in place and a cameo in the film “La La Land” in 2016, Angels Flight has managed to regain its popularity and continue serving both tourists and residents alike. Despite its turbulent history, Angels Flight remains a beloved symbol of Los Angeles’s past and present.
