WWII Marine Corp Veteran, Stearns Poor, was filled with gratitude as he boarded a Southwest Airline flight to Washington, D.C. for the annual Parade of Heroes. Surrounded by appreciative well-wishers at Tampa International Airport, Poor was moved to tears. “There are a lot of wonderful, appreciative people out there,” he shared, touched by the support. As someone who lived through history, Poor remains humble, recalling the overwhelming appreciation he received during a recent visit to Normandy for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day.
Joining Poor on this special trip were 50 men and women from across Florida, all veterans being honored by the Florida State Elks Association and the HCAA. This event brings together heroes from WWII to present day, allowing them to participate in various ceremonies and activities in the nation’s capital. For Vietnam War Vet, Captain Fred Jaca, the opportunity to connect with fellow veterans and share stories is invaluable. Despite the different eras they served in, the bond of military service unites them. Jaca emphasized the importance of supporting veterans who may be struggling with issues, highlighting the need for ongoing events and programs to provide them with a sense of community and understanding.
As the veterans embark on this journey, they carry with them the memories of their service and the camaraderie that comes from being part of a unique brotherhood. The Parade of Heroes serves as a reminder of their sacrifices and a tribute to their bravery. It is a time for them to be honored and celebrated for their contributions to our country.
In addition to the Parade of Heroes, there are various events and activities planned to commemorate Veterans Day and honor those who have served. National Parks are offering free admission to veterans as a token of appreciation for their service and dedication. This gesture reflects the gratitude felt by many Americans towards our veterans, recognizing their sacrifices and valuing their contributions to our nation’s history.
As we take the time to honor our veterans, it is important to remember the significance of their service and the impact they have had on our country. The Parade of Heroes is not just a gathering of veterans, but a representation of the strength, resilience, and patriotism that define the spirit of America. Let us continue to support and honor our veterans, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
