After an extensive investigation, Kyra Worthy, the former executive director of a defunct San Francisco nonprofit, has been arrested for allegedly misusing over $700,000 in public funds. The charges include misappropriation of public money, grand theft by embezzlement, submitting fraudulent invoices, wage theft, and writing fraudulent checks. Worthy, who hails from Richmond, California, reportedly misspent grant funds on luxury gift boxes, a Lake Tahoe trip, parking fees, permits, ride-hailing services, and even a holiday party.
David Gelman, a legal expert, pointed out the lack of oversight in the organization that allowed Worthy to carry out these fraudulent activities unchecked. Gelman emphasized the impact of Worthy’s actions on charities and individuals who were supposed to benefit from the funds. The closure of the nonprofit due to Worthy’s alleged theft has left many in need without support, highlighting the devastating consequences of financial misconduct.
Nicole Castronovo, another legal professional, lamented the downfall of a reputable charity that had longstanding legitimacy and collaboration with the San Francisco Police Department. Castronovo echoed Gelman’s sentiments about the detrimental effects of Worthy’s actions on a city like San Francisco, which heavily relies on such funds for community welfare.
The complaint against Worthy also revealed that she stopped paying payroll taxes for 27 employees in the months leading up to the nonprofit’s closure, resulting in substantial wage theft totaling around $80,000. Additionally, Worthy allegedly failed to distribute over $500,000 in public funds to employees of partner organizations, further exacerbating the financial harm caused by her actions.
Despite the closure of the nonprofit and Worthy’s dismissal, the investigation into the misuse of funds is ongoing.
