(Spielberg bei Knittelfeld) Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) will start the sprint race of the F1 Austrian Grand Prix in pole position on Saturday after setting the fastest time in qualifying on Friday at the Red Bull Ring.
The three-time reigning world champion was able to do well during a very tactical Q3 where the drivers left at the last moment to only complete one fast lap.
Verstappen beat the two McLarens of Briton Lando Norris and Australian Oscar Piastri by 93 and 301 thousandths of a second respectively.
The Briton George Russell (Mercedes) took the fourth time, ahead of the Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), his teammate and compatriot Lewis Hamilton and the Mexican Sergio Perez (Red Bull).
The Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), victim of an anti-stall problem when leaving the pits, was trapped and was unable to set a time, which will cause him to start in only 10th position.
The two Alpines once again managed to slip into Q3, as they did during qualifying in Barcelona last weekend, confirming their recent progress. The French Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly will start in 8th and 9th position on Saturday noon.
