Two people were recovered dead from a car that sunk in the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate.
It is still unclear why the car ended up in the river and how the two occupants, a man and a woman, died, Mainz police said on Tuesday evening. “We do not know the exact background,” said a spokesman.
According to the report, a witness reported a vehicle in the Rhine near Guntersblum, a good 20 kilometers south of Mainz, at around 5.40 p.m. It entered the river from a ramp.
Less than an hour later, divers located the car, which had since sunk. The identity of the dead person was reportedly not yet known. The criminal investigation department is investigating.
The operation involved forces from the fire brigade, the DLRG, several police stations and water police, as well as a police helicopter.
