Kiev accuses Russian troops of beheading a Ukrainian soldier near the front in eastern Ukraine. “We have received information that the leaders of the units of the Russian occupation troops in the Volnovakha area of the Donetsk region have ordered not to take prisoners among the Ukrainian soldiers,” the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said on the online service Telegram.
The head of a Ukrainian soldier was found in a military vehicle during an aerial reconnaissance. Attorney General Andriy Kostin spoke of a clear violation of the Geneva Convention and said the incident would not go unpunished. He called on “the entire civilized world to isolate and punish the terrorist country.”
On X, Kostin continued: “Any head of state who shakes Putin’s hand must be aware that he is shaking the hand of a person who tolerates barbaric murders.”
There was no reaction to the accusation from Moscow. The AFP news agency was unable to independently verify the Ukrainian allegations.
Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly accused each other of crimes on the front lines since the war began in February 2022. As part of a ten-point peace plan, Kyiv is calling for the establishment of a special court to investigate the abuses.
Meanwhile, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, children of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine have been vacationing in North Korean summer camps. During his state visit to Pyongyang on Wednesday, Putin thanked “our Korean friends and especially Comrade Kim Jong-un for organizing summer camps for children of participants who were killed during the special military operation.” Russia describes the offensive in Ukraine as a “special military operation.”
According to Putin, the children were sent to the Sondowon summer camp on North Korea’s Pacific coast. The Russian head of state praised this as a “true act of care and friendship”.
Months ago, the governor of the Russian region of Primorye in eastern Russia had reminded schoolchildren of similar practices during Soviet times: “When we were your age, we went there, there were good camps in Korea. So maybe we will arrange to send some children to pioneer camps. There is the sea over there and it is warm,” said Governor Oleg Koshemyako at the time.
The Russian League for Safe Internet reportedly received a flood of complaints from concerned parents.
