(Cooperstown) Former Montreal Expos pitcher Bartolo Colon is one of 12 new players eligible to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame who were revealed Monday.
Adrian Beltre, Joe Mauer, Chase Utley, David Wright, Jose Bautista, Matt Holliday, Adrian Gonzalez, Victor Martinez, Brandon Phillips, Jose Reyes and James Shields were also added to the ballots, along with 14 players selected as a result of the previous election.
Colon played for 11 teams during his 21-season career, between 1997 and 2018. He boasts a 247-188 record and a 4.12 ERA. The Dominican won the Cy Young award in 2005 when he played with the Los Angeles Angels.
Colon started 17 games for the Expos in 2002, going 10-4 with a 3.31 ERA. He was, in his last season in 2018, the last player still active in major baseball to have worn the uniform of the Montreal team.
Journalists who have been members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for at least 10 consecutive years are eligible to vote. They must submit their ballots by December 31 and the results will be announced on January 23. The induction ceremony will take place on July 21.
In the last ballot, Scott Rolen was the only player to obtain the 75% support necessary to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
