Malware is a type of harmful software that can steal money and personal information from your devices. Cybercriminals are using fake updates in internet browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft to trick users into downloading harmful code. Once the code is on your computer, hackers can access your cryptocurrencies, sensitive files, and personal information.
Proofpoint, an online protection firm, warns that this fake update malware has been circulating since March 2024. The malware poses as fake Google Chrome, Word, and OneDrive errors to convince users to download harmful code. When users click on a button to copy a PowerShell “fix” into the clipboard and run it, the script downloads more payloads, clears the DNS cache, removes clipboard content, and downloads another remote PowerShell script.
Another method cybercriminals use is called “email lure,” where emails appear work-related and contain an HTML file resembling Microsoft Word. Users are prompted to install the “Word Online” extension to view the document correctly, leading to the installation of malware when users copy and paste malicious code into PowerShell.
To protect yourself from such harmful software, follow these tips:
1. Have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices to detect and prevent malware.
2. Use a VPN to protect your online privacy and disguise your IP address.
3. Regularly monitor your financial accounts for any unauthorized activity.
4. Place a fraud alert on your credit file to prevent identity theft.
5. Enable two-factor authentication for an extra layer of security.
It’s essential to be cautious when browsing online or connecting to public Wi-Fi, as hackers can exploit vulnerabilities in devices and networks. Make sure to verify the authenticity of software before downloading and installing it on your devices to avoid falling victim to malware attacks.
