A police officer and a bystander were shot in New York City after a suspect, Gary Worthy, allegedly robbed multiple stores. Worthy, 57, is on lifetime parole for firearms possession and has a criminal record that includes murder, robbery, burglary, and narcotics possession. His recent arrest was for felony narcotics possession and resisting arrest just six days prior.
The incident occurred when Worthy entered the Village Market grocery store, announced a robbery, and threatened workers and customers with a black revolver. He fired a shot during the robbery and fled the scene. Witnesses provided a description of Worthy, and responding officers located him near Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street. When officers ordered him to stop, Worthy drew his firearm, injuring NYPD Officer Rich Wong. Wong returned fire, immobilizing Worthy, who was later pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.
In addition to Officer Wong, a 26-year-old woman was also shot but both are expected to recover fully. Mayor Eric Adams expressed his frustration with the criminal justice system, stating that Worthy, a repeat offender with multiple arrests, should not have been free to commit these crimes.
Police Benefit Association President Patrick Hendry criticized the criminal justice system for failing to keep dangerous criminals off the streets. He emphasized the need for change and called on New Yorkers to demand reforms to prevent such incidents in the future.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and officials continue to gather information to understand the full extent of the events that led to the unfortunate incident. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers face daily and the importance of addressing systemic issues to ensure public safety and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
