The alleged main perpetrator in Bad Oeynhausen is an 18-year-old Syrian. According to FOCUS-online information, he was known to the police for property crimes.
The Syrian had entered Germany in 2018 to join his family in Pforzheim. The whole family then moved to Bad Oeynhausen in 2023. He is said to have stolen the victim’s bag after the beating. 20-year-old Philippos T. died in the attack at the weekend.
The man was arrested at his home address on Wednesday and will be brought before a judge on Thursday, police said
“According to current information, he is the main perpetrator who is said to have inflicted the fatal injuries on the 20-year-old victim,” it said.
The attack took place on Sunday night. A 20-year-old suffered severe injuries and died in hospital shortly afterwards. A homicide squad is investigating the case for manslaughter and grievous bodily harm.
The 20-year-old and a 19-year-old companion are said to have gotten into an argument with a group of men in the spa gardens in Bad Oeynhausen on the night of the crime. The men are said to have then beaten and kicked their victims. One of them then dragged the 20-year-old away from the group and continued to attack him severely. The 19-year-old was slightly injured.
The police had called on witnesses to come forward. Officers had explained that there had been a lot of activity near the spa park on the night of the crime – there had also been a large event. A suspected perpetrator was wearing a conspicuous bright orange jacket, according to investigators.
