Caitlin Clark made a surprising announcement this week, revealing that she would not be participating in the 3-point shooting contest ahead of the WNBA All-Star Game on Friday night. The Indiana Fever rookie is currently tied for third place in made 3-point field goals with 71, alongside Arike Ogunbowale of the Dallas Wings and Kelsey Plum of the Las Vegas Aces. Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty is in second place with 74 makes, while Kayla McBride of the Minnesota Lynx leads with 76.

The upcoming contest will feature players such as McBride, Stefanie Dolson of the Washington Mystics, Allisha Gray of the Atlanta Dream, Jonquel Jones of the Liberty, and Marina Mabrey of the Connecticut Sun. Despite her impressive shooting skills, Clark decided to skip the contest due to the need for rest.

In a statement to reporters, Clark explained, “Honestly, I think it’s just rest. I’ve been playing basketball for a year straight. It’s not an easy thing to just show up to and shoot off a rack. It’s not something I’ve ever done before. It’s not something that I’ve had a lot of time to practice.”

Clark has been continuously playing basketball since the start of the Iowa Hawkeyes’ basketball season last year. Although she had a brief break after the national championship, the WNBA Draft quickly followed by the start of the WNBA season, keeping her busy. Despite not making it to the Olympic roster, Clark emphasized the importance of taking a break and enjoying some personal time.

Looking ahead, the Indiana Fever will return to the court on August 16th for a game against the Phoenix Mercury. Before that, Clark will be competing in the All-Star Game against the women’s Olympic basketball team.
