(Las Vegas) The Canadians’ attempt to win their first trophy in 23 years failed in Sunday’s CONCACAF Nations League final, losing 2-0 to the United States.
The Canadians, 47th in the FIFA rankings, were looking for their first tournament win since the 2000 Gold Cup, and are missing out on the prize money for the Nations League winner, which stands at around US$1 million.
Chris Richards in the 12th minute and Folarin Balogun in the 34th minute scored for the United States, 13th in the FIFA rankings.
Mexico (15th) beat Panama (58th) 1-0 in the third-place game at Allegiant Stadium, courtesy of a fourth-minute goal from Jesus Gallardo.
The Americans also won the first edition of the Nations League in 2021, beating Mexico in the final.
Canada now looks to the Gold Cup, which kicks off June 27 at BMO Field in Toronto, against an as-yet-unnamed opponent.
