Cannabis Use Among Seniors on the Rise, Leading to Increase in ER Visits

Seniors across Canada are increasingly turning to cannabis for recreational or medicinal purposes, but a new study has found that this trend is leading to a rise in emergency room visits due to accidental cannabis poisoning. The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, reveals that the number of seniors aged 65 and older visiting Ontario emergency departments with cannabis poisoning has tripled between 2015 and 2022.

Dr. Nathan Stall, a geriatrician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and lead author of the study, highlights the potential risks associated with cannabis use among older adults. He recalls a case of an elderly patient presenting at the ER with symptoms such as decreased consciousness, hallucinations, high blood pressure, and heart rate, all stemming from unintentional consumption of edible cannabis products.

The study indicates that the rate of ER visits for cannabis poisoning among seniors surged following the legalization of dried cannabis flowers and spiked once again after the legalization of edible cannabis products. While cannabis use among older Canadians remains relatively low compared to other age groups, the increase in cannabis-related ER visits raises concerns among experts.

Dr. Hance Clarke, a pain specialist at Toronto General Hospital, emphasizes the importance of safe cannabis consumption practices for seniors. He points out that today’s cannabis products are much more potent than those available decades ago, increasing the risk of accidental poisoning among older adults. Furthermore, the delayed onset of effects from edibles can lead to individuals unknowingly consuming excessive doses.

To address these concerns, experts recommend keeping edible cannabis products in locked locations, ensuring clear labeling on all cannabis products, and providing senior-specific dosing guidance. By raising awareness about the potential risks of cannabis use among seniors and promoting responsible consumption practices, healthcare providers can help mitigate the growing issue of cannabis-related ER visits in this age group.
