Cavs Coaching Search Expands with Permission to Interview Assistants Bryant, Quinn
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers are ramping up their search for a new head coach, with the addition of two more candidates to the list. According to a source familiar with the process, the Cavs have been granted permission to speak with New York Knicks assistant Johnnie Bryant and Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn.
The coaching search began after J.B. Bickerstaff’s departure following the Cavs’ playoff elimination by the Boston Celtics. The team is looking for a fresh voice to lead them to championship contention, and they are exploring various options to fill the position.
In addition to Bryant and Quinn, Cleveland has also received clearance to interview Golden State’s Kenny Atkinson and New Orleans’ James Borrego. The team is keeping its search broad and is expected to consider more candidates in the coming days.
The potential hiring of Bryant, who has a strong connection with All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell, could play a key role in the team’s future plans. Mitchell is reportedly considering a contract extension with the Cavs, and Bryant’s hiring could sway his decision.
Meanwhile, Quinn, who is highly respected in Miami, has been a sought-after candidate for coaching positions in recent years. The Heat, on the other hand, have been negotiating new contracts with assistant coaches Caron Butler and Malik Allen.
Bickerstaff’s dismissal came as a surprise to many, considering the progress he made with the team during his tenure. Despite facing numerous challenges, including injuries to key players, Bickerstaff led the Cavs to the playoffs last season for the first time since 2018.
As the coaching search continues, Cleveland remains focused on finding the right candidate to lead the team to success in the upcoming season.
