CFL 2024 Season Preview: BC Lions Eyeing First Grey Cup Victory at Home

The BC Lions have been dominant in the CFL for the past two seasons, but have consistently fallen short of making it to the Grey Cup. Despite finishing the 2023 season with a strong 12-6 record, the Lions were unable to secure the West Division title, finishing just behind the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Heading into the playoffs, the team lost two of their last three games, but managed to pick up a 41-30 win over the Calgary Stampeders in the first round.

One of the biggest losses for the Lions in the offseason was CFL sack leader Mathieu Betts, who signed with the NFL’s Detroit Lions after an outstanding season with 18 sacks. However, the team is looking to Sione Teuhema and Pete Robertson to step up in Betts’ absence, as they both had seven sacks each in the previous season.

On the defensive side, the Lions are boosted by the return of top tackler Ben Hladik, who had over 100 tackles in the 2023 season. Josh Woods and Patrick Rene are also players to watch, with Rene playing in the secondary and taking on the SAM linebacker role.

Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. remains a key player on offense after a stellar 2023 season, throwing for 4,769 yards and 31 touchdowns. With the addition of former Montreal Alouettes rusher William Stanback in the backfield, Adams has a strong supporting cast that includes receivers Keon Hatcher and Alexander Hollins.

As the Lions gear up for the 2024 season, head coach Rick Campbell is focused on leading the team to success and ultimately, a shot at the Grey Cup. With the championship game taking place in British Columbia this year, the pressure is on for the Lions to deliver and secure their first Grey Cup victory at home. Can they overcome the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and finally claim the title?
