Chris Paul wasted no time in finding a new team after being let go by the Golden State Warriors. Reports emerged hours after his release indicating that he had reached a deal with the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. This move would potentially see him sharing the court with players like Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, and Jeremy Sochan.
According to ESPN, Paul’s contract with the Spurs is valued at $11 million for one year. Last season, he played for the Warriors following a trade that involved Jordan Poole. Despite playing in 58 games, the 12-time All-Star averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds. This marked the second consecutive season in which he played fewer than 60 games, with the previous one being with the Phoenix Suns in the 2022-23 season. This is the first time he has had back-to-back seasons with limited games since his time with the Houston Rockets in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Chris Paul has long been regarded as one of the top point guards in the NBA since he entered the league in 2005. He currently holds the record for the most assists among active players with 11,894. Alongside LeBron James, he is one of only two players with over 11,000 assists in NBA history.
Despite his impressive career, Paul has yet to secure an NBA championship. He came close in 2021 when he led the Suns to the NBA Finals, only to be defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks in six games.
As Paul approaches his 40th birthday, he maintains career averages of 17.5 points and 9.4 assists per game. His experience and leadership will undoubtedly be valuable assets to the Spurs as they look to make a playoff push in the upcoming season.
