A film whose script was generated by an AI was scheduled to premiere in London. However, the screening was cancelled due to massive backlash.
The Prince Charles Cinema in London’s West End, known for showing cult and art films, was scheduled to show a new production called “The Last Screenwriter” on Sunday. However, after strong backlash on social media, the screening was suddenly cancelled, as the British “Guardian” reports.
“Yesterday we reported on a private distribution event taking place next weekend that will showcase a project scripted by AI,” the Prince Charles Cinema said in a statement posted on Instagram.
“The feedback we have received in the last 24 hours since the film was announced has highlighted the strong concerns many of our viewers have about the use of AI instead of a screenwriter.” For this reason, the decision was made not to show the film.
According to the Guardian, “The Last Screenwriter” is a Swiss production that describes itself as the story of a “celebrated screenwriter who finds his world turned upside down when he encounters a cutting-edge AI screenwriting system… and soon realises that the AI is not only equal to his abilities, but surpasses him in terms of compassion and understanding of human emotions”. The screenplay is credited to “ChatGPT 4.0”.
Many fans are celebrating this decision: “And this is exactly why you are my favorite cinema in the world, thank you,” reads one comment. “AI will destroy the meaning of cinema. A visionary director and a 70mm camera are the way,” reads another.
