In the largest trial to date against the democracy movement in Hong Kong, a court on Thursday found 14 people guilty of subversion.

The 14 democracy activists would have triggered a “constitutional crisis” if their plans had been successful, the judges said. Two people were reportedly found not guilty.

A total of 47 opposition members have been charged with political activities in 2020 and face life sentences. 31 of the defendants have already pleaded guilty. The basis of the proceedings is the so-called national security law, which Beijing imposed after the pro-democracy mass protests in 2019.
