An Australian swimming coach faced criticism recently for supporting a South Korean athlete who will be competing for a different country at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Head coach Rohan Taylor expressed disappointment in Michael Palfrey’s public endorsement of the South Korean swimmer Kim Woo-min, calling it “un-Australian.” Taylor even hinted that Palfrey might be asked to return to Australia before the swimming events kick off this weekend.

The controversy arose when Palfrey, who is part of the Australian Olympic staff, openly rooted for Kim, the South Korean men’s 400-meter freestyle world champion, to win gold at the upcoming competition. Despite Palfrey’s apology for what was deemed a lapse in judgment, Taylor mentioned that he would convene with the Australian athletes to determine Palfrey’s future with the team in Paris.

Australia boasts two strong contenders for the 400 freestyle event: Sam Short, the 2023 world champion, and Elijah Winnington, the 2022 world champion. While it is not uncommon for coaches to work with athletes from other nations, Taylor emphasized that expressing support for a foreign swimmer so close to the Olympics was unacceptable.

Some of the top American coaches, like Bob Bowman, also train athletes from different countries. For instance, Bowman coaches French star Léon Marchand. However, given the proximity of the Olympics, Taylor stressed that it was inappropriate for an Australian coach to back a swimmer from another country.

Despite the controversy, Australian swimmer Bronte Campbell, a four-time Olympian, stated that the issue has not caused much disturbance within the team. Campbell highlighted the importance of conserving energy and focusing on performance during the emotionally charged Olympic competition.

As the athletes gear up for the swimming events at Defense Arena in Paris, the situation with Palfrey serves as a reminder of the intense competitive spirit and national pride that characterize the Olympics. While the incident may have caused a stir, the Australian team remains focused on their performance and the challenges that lie ahead in the pool.
