According to the State Office for Health and Social Affairs of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a vibrio infection has occurred on the Baltic Sea for the first time this year. The dangerous germ enters the body through open wounds, among other things, and can cause serious and even fatal infections. The authority has issued a warning to holidaymakers.

After infections with vibrios were reported in the Baltic Sea in summer 2023, the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LAGuS) of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has now confirmed the first infection this year.

According to the report, a 55-year-old woman from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania became infected with the germ while walking on the beach. The contaminated sea water from the Baltic Sea entered her body through an open wound.

As the LAGuS reports, the infection was quickly recognized. The woman was treated as an outpatient. In 2023, a total of five infections with the germ were reported in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, one of which was fatal.

Vibrio infections are not something to be taken lightly: if the germs enter the body through wounds, they can cause severe and, in rare cases, even fatal infections.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, older people with a weakened immune system, people with chronic diseases and people with cancer are particularly at risk.

The bacteria can also enter the body through food, for example through undercooked fish, mussels or crabs.

As current laboratory results commissioned by LAGuS show, an increased occurrence of vibrios in the Baltic Sea and in the bottom waters is to be expected until the end of the bathing season this year.
