New Orleans police are looking into two shootings near a popular parade route on Sunday that resulted in two fatalities and 10 injuries. The first shooting happened around 3:38 p.m. on Almonaster Avenue, where eight individuals were found shot. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Shortly after, another shooting occurred at the intersection of Almonaster and Florida avenues, leaving two individuals shot, one of whom died at the scene and the other at the hospital.
The Nine Times Second Line parade was immediately halted as part of the investigation. Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick mentioned that this parade, known for attracting large crowds, has had a history of potential violence. Due to this, a significant number of officers were assigned to monitor the event to ensure safety. Despite the tragic incidents, Kirkpatrick emphasized the desire to maintain the positive nature of the parade.
As of now, the suspects behind the shootings remain at large, and the motives are yet to be determined. Governor Jeff Landry expressed his condolences for the victims and urged for an end to such violence.
