(Copenhagen) Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked by a man on Friday in a square in Copenhagen, her office announced, specifying that the attacker had been arrested.
“Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was hit by a man on Friday evening on Kultorvet in Copenhagen. The man has been arrested,” said a statement from his services, adding that Ms. Frederiksen was “shocked by the incident.”
Copenhagen police confirmed that an incident involving the prime minister had occurred, but did not provide further details.
“One person has been arrested in this case, which is currently under investigation. At this time, we have no further comments or remarks to make,” police said in a statement posted on X.
“I have to say that this upsets those of us who are close to her,” Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke said in a social media post. “Such a thing must not happen in our beautiful, safe and free country.”
The attack is “revolting”, reacted the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, judging that “violence [had] no place in politics”.
Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, declared himself “indignant” and indicated, in a message on the social network X, that he “firmly condemned this cowardly aggression”, which occurred as the Danes prepare to participate in the European elections on Sunday.
