The Cologne-based engine manufacturer Deutz is planning to enter two new market segments. CEO Sebastian Schulte, speaking to WELT AM SONNTAG, named decentralized power generation and the defense sector as future business areas.

The company is considering supplying engines for wheeled tanks, personnel carriers and supply vehicles, among other things. It could also offer battery storage for stationary supply to hospitals. “This is certainly an attractive field, it brings with it a turning point,” said the Deutz boss.

According to Schulte, the plans for emergency power supply are already more concrete. “The market for emergency generators, which are still powered by diesel today, is growing. Curiously, this is even a consequence of the energy transition, because in countries like the USA, where the power grids are in a desolate state, there are sometimes power outages several times a month in certain regions,” he said.

So far, Deutz has only supplied engines to the manufacturers of such units, which are used in hospitals, cooling systems and data centers, for example. In the future, the entire system will come from the company listed on the S-Dax. The two much larger US competitors Cummins and Caterpillar are already strongly represented in this business.
