At least six people have died in a landslide in a region popular with tourists in southern Ecuador, authorities said.
At least 30 others were reported missing after the incident in the municipality of BaƱos de Agua Santa in the province of Tungurahua, the civil protection agency announced on Sunday (local time). The landslide occurred as a result of heavy rainfall, it said in a statement to the media.
Following the accident, several seaside resorts were closed and the main road in the region was also impassable. Several rivers in the region were close to overflowing, as can be seen in pictures sent to the AFP news agency by local residents. The heavy rain continued on Sunday, making rescue operations difficult.
According to the Presidential Office, the rains also caused damage in other parts of the country. 48 emergencies were registered nationwide.
