Borussia Dortmund has announced the departure of manager Edin Terzic, who requested to terminate his contract with the club immediately. The decision comes after Dortmund reached the Champions League final in the 2023-24 season but were defeated by Real Madrid at Wembley. In a statement, the German club revealed that they agreed to Terzic’s request following a joint discussion.
Terzic, 41, expressed his feelings about leaving the club where he spent nine years, including six as part of the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach. He mentioned that he believes a new era for the club should begin with a new man on the touchline. The former manager began his coaching career with Dortmund’s academy before moving on to work as an assistant at clubs like Besiktas and West Ham. He returned to Dortmund as an assistant coach under Lucien Favre and later took over as the interim boss, leading the team to German Cup final success in 2021. After a brief stint as the club’s technical director, Terzic was appointed as the manager in 2022.
During his time as manager, Dortmund finished as runners-up in the Bundesliga and secured a fifth-place finish in the 2023-24 season, earning qualification for the Champions League. Hans-Joachim Watzke, the chief executive of Dortmund, praised Terzic for his outstanding work and expressed gratitude towards him, stating that they will remain friends.
