Empowering Teachers to Support Students in US Illegally

The National Education Association recently hosted a webinar advocating for teachers to oppose President-elect Donald Trump on immigration reform. The goal is to create a safe and welcoming environment for students who are in the country illegally, making them feel less afraid.

Why Teachers are Taking a Stand

During the webinar, Jennifer Berkshire, author of The Education Wars, highlighted the importance of teachers in protecting students from potential changes in immigration policies. She emphasized that current laws prevent immigration agents from entering school grounds, a protection that some in the Trump administration want to roll back.

Trump has stated that his focus will be on targeted deportations for violent criminals who entered the country illegally, prioritizing apprehending terrorists and cartels. This has sparked concern among educators about the safety and well-being of their students.

Voices of Concern and Action

Rebecca S. Pringle, president of the National Education Association, has been vocal in opposing the Trump administration’s stance on immigration. She has described it as “tyrannical, deceitful, and corrupt,” underscoring the urgency for teachers to take a stand and support their students.

Chelsie Acosta, chair of the NEA Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee and a board director for the American Civil Liberties Union, expressed her concerns for the community. Reflecting on the current political climate, she emphasized the need for solidarity and support for all students, especially those most vulnerable.

Empathy and Action in Education

As educators navigate these challenging times, Caitlin Ehlers, a member of the NEA’s Aspiring Educators Program, opened the webinar with a powerful land acknowledgment. She reminded participants of the Indigenous peoples whose lands they inhabit, urging everyone to honor and learn from their history, culture, and contributions.

In the face of uncertainty and fear, teachers are standing up for their students, creating a sense of safety and belonging in the classroom. By fostering empathy and taking action, educators are empowering their students to thrive despite the challenges they may face. Together, they are building a community of support and resilience in the pursuit of education for all.
