In the latest episode of Farm Progress America on June 12, 2024, Mike Pearson provided an update on the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) situation in Iowa. Iowa has become the 10th state to report HPAI in a dairy cow herd, bringing the total number of states with confirmed cases to 12, including Minnesota and Wyoming.

The recent discovery of HPAI in a dairy herd in O’Brien County marks the first case since the end of April. Officials are emphasizing the importance of enhancing biosecurity measures on farms and minimizing contact between infected dairy cattle, poultry, and farm workers to prevent further spread of the virus.

It is anticipated that the HPAI virus will continue to pose a threat throughout the summer months. Since the initial detection of the virus in 2022, more than 100 million birds have been culled as a result of the outbreak.

USDA Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has expressed confidence in the USDA’s understanding of the virus and its mode of transmission. The USDA is collaborating with producers to identify and isolate infected herds, as well as implementing quarantine measures on affected farms. While the culling of dairy cattle is not deemed necessary at this time, producers are strongly advised against mixing infected animals with healthy ones.

Producers are advised to be vigilant for symptoms of HPAI in their livestock, including respiratory distress, swelling of the head, and an unexpected significant decline in milk production. By remaining alert and taking proactive measures, farmers can help mitigate the spread of the virus within their operations.
