A young man admitted to killing two pedestrians while driving drunk on New Year’s Day morning, receiving seven years in prison. The driver was traveling at a speed three times higher than the limit imposed at the scene of the tragedy.

Antoine Dubuc pleaded guilty to hit-and-run and impaired driving charges at the Montreal courthouse on Tuesday. He received a seven-year prison sentence.

The events occurred on the morning of January 1 around 1:20 a.m. The driver was behind the wheel of an Acura vehicle and was traveling on Henri-Bourassa Boulevard. He was traveling at a speed of approximately 164 km/h, while the speed limit in this area is 50 km/h.

At the same time, Augustin Wesley Katimba and Michael Chintakis, two pedestrians, walk on Boulevard de l’Acadie and travel along Boulevard Henri-Bourassa. “They are crossing on their respective crosswalks while their pedestrian light is white,” according to the agreed statement of facts filed during the hearing.

Antoine Dubuc then crossed the red traffic light at the intersection, hitting the two victims. He continues his journey despite everything and loses control of his vehicle a kilometer further. According to the summary of the facts, he drove on the sidewalk, hit a lamppost and ended up in a concrete wall.

The driver was then arrested by the police who noticed signs of intoxication, namely a strong odor of alcohol and difficulty standing. Analyzes show a high blood alcohol level.
