A young man admitted to killing two pedestrians while driving drunk on New Year’s Day morning, receiving seven years in prison. The driver was traveling at a speed three times higher than the limit imposed at the scene of the tragedy.

Antoine Dubuc pleaded guilty to charges of hit-and-run and impaired driving on Tuesday at the Montreal courthouse. He received a seven-year prison sentence.

The events occurred on the morning of January 1 around 1:20 a.m. The driver was behind the wheel of an Acura vehicle and was traveling on Henri-Bourassa Boulevard. He was then traveling at a speed of approximately 164 km/h, while the limit in this sector is 50 km/h.

At the same time, Augustin Wesley Katimba and Michael Chintakis, two pedestrians, walk on Boulevard de l’Acadie and travel along Boulevard Henri-Bourassa. “They are crossing on their respective pedestrian crossings while their pedestrian light is white,” according to the joint statement of facts filed during the hearing.

Antoine Dubuc then ran the red traffic light at the intersection, hitting the two victims. He continued on his way despite everything and lost control of his vehicle a kilometer later. According to the summary of events, he drove on the sidewalk, hit a lamppost and ended up in a concrete wall.

The driver was then arrested by the police, who noted signs of intoxication, namely a strong odor of alcohol and difficulty standing. Analyzes show high blood alcohol levels.
