(Kansas City) Jared Goff threw for 253 yards and a touchdown, new running back David Montgomery scored the game-clinching major with five minutes and five seconds remaining in the game, and the Detroit Lions defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 21- 20 in the first game of the NFL season on Thursday.
Amon-Ra St. Brown caught six balls for 71 yards and a touchdown, and Lions rookie Brian Branch returned a Patrick Mahomes interception 50 yards for another touchdown. The Lions ended the Chiefs’ eight-game winning streak in the season opener.

The Lions were trying to run out the clock when Goff saw his pass on a fourth down knocked down with 2:30 left, giving the Chiefs a chance to score.
The local favorites, however, spoiled this chance. Kadarius Toney fumbled the ball on a potential 20-yard play, another 20-yard gain was nullified by a penalty, and Skyy Moore also fumbled a pass before a false start put Mahomes fourth-and-25 yards.
After the turnover on downs, Montgomery got a first down on a run, allowing the Lions to let the last seconds tick away.

Mahomes finished with 226 yards and two touchdowns, despite several passes that slipped through the fingers of his receivers. He also led in rushing yards for the Chiefs, who were unable to undo their mistakes.
