Tyler Bradley Dykes, a former Marine from South Carolina, has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for his involvement in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The 26-year-old was charged with assaulting law enforcement after prosecutors revealed that he stole a police officer’s riot shield to aid in breaching the Capitol building.

Previously, Dykes was convicted of a felony for his participation in the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that his actions, along with others, led to the disruption of a joint session of the U.S. Congress that was held to certify the electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election.

During the riot, prosecutors reported that Dykes played an active role in assisting the crowd in moving fences towards the Capitol doors, pushing officers away from their positions, giving a Nazi salute, and ultimately using a stolen police riot shield to facilitate the breach of the Capitol.

The Department of Justice recommended a sentence of five years and three months for Dykes, while his defense lawyers argued for a shorter sentence of two years. They highlighted that Dykes had taken responsibility for his actions by pleading guilty to the assault charges in April, emphasized that he was only 22 years old at the time of the riot, and pointed out that he had joined the Marine Corps to serve his country.

The sentencing was carried out by Judge Beryl A. Howell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Despite the defense’s plea for a lighter sentence, Dykes received a prison term of four years and nine months for his role in the Capitol riot.

This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of participating in violent and unlawful activities, especially when they involve assaulting law enforcement officers and disrupting the democratic process. The judicial system’s decision to hold individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their background or affiliations, underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice is served.

It is crucial for all citizens to respect the institutions that safeguard democracy and to express their grievances through peaceful and lawful means. By upholding these values, we can protect the integrity of our democratic processes and prevent incidents like the Capitol riot from happening in the future.
